Location: MA, US

Company: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

Group 71—Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering Group focuses on developing innovative mechanical design solutions for ground, airborne, and spaceborne applications. Areas of mechanical design expertise include large structures, composite structures, highly efficient lightweight structures, mechanisms, optomechanical systems, electro-optic systems, electronics packaging, and cabling. Engineers from the group are critical to all aspects of program execution beginning with conceptual design, continuing through detail design, system integration and test, and concluding with environmentaland performance testing. The group is the Engineering Division's center for 3D computer-aided design and configuration management. Example projects include airborne and space-based laser communications systems, biological agent detectors and identifiers, and large radar antenna systems.

Design Engineer – Specialist

Lincoln Laboratory is a fast paced, innovative, research and development environment with a reputation for excellence in the production of unique, prototype systems critical to national security.  The Mechanical Engineering Group has extensive capabilities necessary for the design of undersea, ground, airborne and space systems which allow us to tackle a wide range of technical challenges including large structures, space systems, and high precision optical systems. The group is also the Engineering Division’s center for CAD and data management.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead the mechanical hardware design efforts of prototype systems development through concept, preliminary, and detailed design phases
  • Work as part of a larger, interdisciplinary team of engineers to support the execution of hardware development programs
  • Possess a good working knowledge of manufacturing and assembly techniques, CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, PDM (Product Data Management) and/or PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software, basic FEA, ASME drafting standards including GD&T.
  • Develop design concepts and layouts.Perform analysis as necessary in the support of design.
  • Produce finished manufacturing documentation consisting of 3D CAD models, assembly and detail drawings (including dimensional tolerances, surface finishes, and materials), and parts lists.
  • Prepare engineering release and change request documentation and fabrication orders.
  • Support the entire fabrication and assembly process, as required.

Design Engineers in the Mechanical Engineering Group require little supervision and perform assignments with creative ability, resourcefulness, and originality. Design Engineers must take initiative and be thorough and detailed. They must work effectively with individuals from various groups and at many levels of the organization. They must also demonstrate effective communication skills.

Requirements:

Experience designing opto-mechanics, structures, or electronic packaging

Experience with Microsoft Office and SolidWorks

BSME with 5 -10 years of experience
