The Human Resilience Technology Group uses its experience developing sensors, analytics, and decision support software to build technologies and systems that improve human resilience by aiding in wildfire response coordination, urban search-and-rescue missions, damage assessments after hurricanes and earthquakes, and large-scale evacuation planning. We work closely with local, state, and federal agencies to develop these technologies. Our goal is to enable organizations to more effectively gain situational awareness, share information, and make decisions in times of crisis. We also prototype technologies that facilitate civilian–military collaboration, which helps to improve the safety of civilians in conflict areas. Many of our programs involve collaboration across Laboratory groups whose technologies can be applied to human resilience missions.

 

Job Description

The Human Resilience Technology Group develops, adapts, and deploys advanced technologies to address the most significant challenges in human systems resilience, disaster relief, global development, and humanitarian assistance. We extend rapidly evolving technical capabilities – such as remote sensing and signal processing techniques, data science, software tools, and systems analysis – to under-served mission needs across the domestic and international landscape. Recent program efforts have included:

  • Integrating advanced remote sensing and situational awareness technologies into large-scale disaster relief and recovery needs
  • Applying novel analytical methods – including artificial intelligence and machine learning – to longstanding resilience challenges, especially in sparse and challenging data environments
  • Creating software decision support and data visualization platforms for critical decision-making

Job Requirements

Our Group is actively seeking remote sensing, data exploitation, and algorithm development specialists and engineers to join interdisciplinary teams on the research, design, development, and implementation of technologies in these areas. The collection of mission and technical areas that we support is quite broad, and we recognize that successful candidates may come with a similarly wide range of technical backgrounds and extracurricular experiences:

  • Extensive practical experience with spaceborne, airborne, and UAS-based remote sensing platforms and data sources, including interferometric synthetic aperture radar, lidar, and/or hyperspectral data sets is required.
  • Experience with scientific programming languages and tools (Python, MATLAB, etc.) is highly desired.
  • Experience with machine learning and algorithm development, modern geographic information systems (GIS), and high-performance computing systems is required.
  • Exceptionally relevant ecological intelligence or geophysics-oriented field, lab, or extracurricular experience will be well considered.

 

This role focuses on advanced geospatial signal processing, research, algorithm development, and will require close collaboration with scientific technical experts, disaster resilience specialists, and internal/external stakeholders.

 

Ph.D. in Geosciences, Geophysics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geography, or similar applied remote sensing-centric disciplines. Candidates with a M.S. Degree and 3 years of direct relevant experience will also be considered

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $145,200 - $170,000

Experienced Hiring Range: $145,200 - $220,000
