The Human Health & Performance Systems Group develops human-centered technologies to overcome operational challenges and to enhance human capability in domains of interest to national security. Our research programs focus on innovative and objective solutions in the areas of foreign language learning, integrated wearable systems, human-machine teaming, neurocognitive analytics, and medical technologies. In the foreign language learning domain, we emphasize the application of generative AI to enable personalized, adaptive, and scalable foreign language training, including the development, fine-tuning, and evaluation of large language models for instructional use. Our group is highly interdisciplinary and includes scientific experts in linguistics, physiology, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, biomechanics, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics. Our core technical competencies include system-level modeling, advanced sensing and signal processing, generative and discriminative machine learning, hardware and software prototyping, and human data collection in laboratory and field environments. 

 

Job Description

 

As an Associate Staff in the Accelerated Learning domain, you will work with your team to address key stakeholder needs and further the Group's mission by: 

 

• Developing individualized learning pipelines based on deep understanding of language learning concepts and generative AI-driven personalization strategies  

 

• Designing and implementing Generative AI systems to support adaptive tutoring, automated feedback, content generation, and learner assessment 

 

• Curating, annotating, and managing text corpora (e.g., learner responses, instructional content, proficiency-aligned corpora) to support LLM training, fine-tuning, and evaluation 

 

• Creating novel AI-based tools to infer individuals' cognitive states with generative models to adapt learning experiences in near-real time 

 

• Developing software to deploy laboratory-developed GenAI-enabled systems into real-world environments where training and education occurs 

 

• Designing and executing human subject studies to validate AI- and GenAI-driven learning paradigms, including their effectiveness, robustness, and ethical use 

 

 

Requirements

 

• A Masters’ degree in computer science, AI/ML, data science, mathematics, statistics, applied linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, or related fields, or 2+ years of equivalent experience.  

 

• Strong background in AI: Experience with Python and modern AI methods, including Generative AI and foundation models (e.g., large language models, feedback, and content generation), Responsible AI, and machine learning (e.g., model tuning and training, PyTorch, deep learning, transformers).  

 

• Experience applying these methods to language, learning, or human-centered AI problems is strongly preferred. 

 

 

 

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $116,400 - $140,000

Experienced Hiring Range: $116,400 - $182,200
