The Advanced Materials and Microsystems Group (G81) works at the convergence of materials science and micro- and nanoscale engineering to develop microsystems with novel functionality. We develop material, novel microelectronics, and fiber- and textile-based microsystems, with the aim to leverage novel and enabling form factors in everything we do. Our application space is broad, encompassing low-cost picosatellites fabricated in a silicon foundry, advanced fibers that can sense and communicate and be woven into clothing, energy-efficient microhydraulic actuators for micro-robotics, optofluidics for enhanced eyewear, novel energy storage, and many others.

 

Job Description

 

The Group focuses on fast-paced research that is frequently requires both scientific and business process innovation.  We are seeking a Business Manager to join our leadership team who will thrive in this innovative environment. The Business Manager will manage and lead the financial and administrative operations for the group, with a focus on facilitating technical execution and program development.

 

Description

 

  • Manage the group’s financial portfolio including tracking the funding, planning and financial execution of all programs, and other sources of funding flowing into and out of the group.
  • In collaboration with staff members, develop and maintain detailed funding and execution plans for all sources of funding. The candidate will develop and maintain a detailed situational awareness of the group’s funding and execution and provide actionable data to support technical management’s decision making.
  • Actively pursue process improvements and work to add value to the group’s operations, including assuming responsibility for the majority of non-technical decision making related to group finance, procurement, and administration.
  • Specific responsibilities include cost estimating, budget preparation, program/WBS creation, monitoring performance, internal reporting, program closeouts, and process management of all financial and operational tasks.
  • Interface with sponsor counterparts on a regular basis.
  • Supervise and direct the work of the group’s administrative assistants and business team, and function as the team leader for group financial, procurement and administrative activities.

 

Additional responsibilities include oversight of space management, procurement management, property management, and other miscellaneous tasks.

 

Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or related field
  • 5-8 years applicable experience beyond degree
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
  • A solid understanding of financial and government processes
  • Strong analytical and estimating techniques
  • Ability to analyze, create and present financial results/reports
  • Interest and willingness to pursue process improvement initiatives to increase the efficiency of the group
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance is required

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

 

  • Master’s degree in Business or related field
  • Program management experience with Federally Funded Programs
  • Experience working in a research and development environment or government office
  • SAP Hana
  • SAP Business Objects BI Suite
