Energy Systems Power Electronics Engineer

Date: May 12, 2023

Location: Lexington, MA, US

Company: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

The Energy Systems Group is part of the Homeland Protection Division (https://www.ll.mit.edu/r-d/homeland-protection ) and focuses on assisting the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security in securing the nation from energy-related threats (https://www.ll.mit.edu/r-d/homeland-protection/energy-systems ). Our group works on diverse programs including domestic and tactical military base energy resilience, microgrids - energy systems that can operate independently from the bulk electric grid, and development of advanced tactical energy technologies. This includes developing advanced architectures and system designs to improve the resiliency of power generation sources, handheld portable electronics, critical large load power supplies, and developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds. Projects are typically conducted in small team environments, leveraging expertise from within Lincoln Laboratory and MIT campus to successfully execute nationally important and cutting-edge efforts.

Position Summary

The Energy Systems Group is interested in candidates with experience and interest in power electronic circuit design, in the controls systems that operate those devices, and methods to increase performance. The candidate hired for this position will work with teams of cross-disciplinary scientists and engineers to: understand existing power systems, their capabilities, drawbacks, risks, needs, and develop new power electronics designs, so that we can rapidly deploy technology solutions to operators and provide guidance to senior leaders in the U.S. government.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team to analyze and develop architectures, power switching devices, and controls to increase the performance of power electronic devices.
  • Work in a lab environment with oscilloscopes, high power supplies, and loads will be required.  Strong laboratory and field experience is required
  • Work hands-on with component models, simulation, and our existing hardware-in-the-loop system platforms to develop algorithms, perform data analysis, and interface software.  Device interactions with other sub-system components will also be investigated.

Required:

  • Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or related field or a Master's degree with 2-5+ years of work experience
  • Proficient with high-level programming languages (e.g., Python, Matlab)
  • Experience developing, implementing, testing, and evaluating new algorithms and concepts
  • Ability to work effectively with a high level of uncertainty and conflicting or limited information
  • Ability to quickly learn new technical areas and apply that knowledge to solve challenging problem

Desired:
