Group 04-47 | SRP Intern | Energy Systems | Summer 2026
Date: Oct 23, 2025
Location: Lexington, MA, US
Company: MIT Lincoln Laboratory
The Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops technology solutions that enhance the resilience and efficiency of both civilian and defense energy systems. This includes developing advanced architectures and system designs to improve the resilience of power grids, developing new control techniques for microgrids and distributed energy resources, developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds, and power improvements to make warfighter hardware more capable.
Position Description
Summer Intern – Power Electronics
The Energy Systems Group seeks a summer intern to join a multidisciplinary team that researches and develops power electronic circuitry, the controls that operate those devices, and methods to enhance their performance. Experience in high-frequency and RF design is desired.
The candidate will work to understand existing power systems—their capabilities, drawbacks, risks, and needs—and will contribute to developing new power electronics designs. The outcome of this work will support the rapid deployment of technology solutions to operators and provide guidance to senior leaders in the U.S. government.
Qualifications
Candidates who are in the process of earning a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or another engineering discipline will be considered.
Desired Technical Experience
Experience or familiarity in a subset of the following areas is desired:
- Programming: Fluency with high-level languages such as Python or MATLAB
- Algorithm development: Exposure to developing, implementing, testing, and evaluating new algorithms and concepts
- Simulation tools: Familiarity with power electronics tools such as Simulink, Ansys, SPICE, or SABER
- Laboratory skills: Hands-on experience in circuit design and testing in a lab environment
- Hardware expertise: RF and high-frequency hardware familiarity
- Soft skills: Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and capacity to work independently for portions of the summer
- Communication: Effective written and oral communication skills in technical environments
Summer Research Program Overview
The Summer Research Program offers students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world national security challenges while working alongside leading scientists and engineers. As an SRP intern, you’ll engage in hands-on research, receive dedicated mentorship, and take part in professional development opportunities including workshops, tech talks, and networking events—all while building connections within a vibrant community of peers.
- Internships are typically 10–12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates, typically May through early August.
- Housing support is available for eligible non-local interns, including access to discounted university housing in Boston and a one-time taxable relocation payment.
- Complimentary daily shuttle transportation is provided from Boston-based housing to and from the Lab.
