The Mechanical Engineering Group provides innovative mechanical solutions for advanced technology prototypes. Projects we have worked on include: laser communication, high-energy laser sensors, biological agent detectors, and large radar antennas for systems deployed on ground, maritime, air- and space-borne platforms. We have expertise in precision engineering, opto-mechanics, electronics packaging, large structures, highly efficient lightweight structures, composite materials and additive manufacturing. We are the Engineering Division's center for 3D CAD and data management, and are involved in every step of a program's execution from conceptual design to system integration and test.
Position Description
The group seeks a co-op to assist staff members in the Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering field of design, structural analysis, assembly, integration and testing and/or systems engineering. Design duties include using CAD software to make part models, generating drawings and ensuring proper fabrication of parts. Structural analysis duties could include: creating and running finite element models, analyzing model results, structural or thermal testing and creating databases. Assembly, Integration and Test duties include developing AI&T procedures and assisting with AI&T activities and documentation. Systems engineering duties could include supporting payload architecture definition (optical, mechanical, electrical), generating system-level block diagram (electrical and/or mechanical) and integration and test planning.
The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and assist Mechanical Engineering Group staff members in the development of new prototypes. Candidates with hands-on experience with development, integration and testing of mechanical systems are preferred.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a formal coop program of study in engineering or physics (Mechanical
Engineering or Aerospace Engineering preferred) - Completed Mechanical Design, Mechanics of Materials or equivalent classes
- GPA 3.0/4.0 or higher
- Mechanical CAD experience preferred, but not required
Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
