Job Description:  The Laser Technology and Applications Group has an opening for a full-time Technician to support the development of high-power laser systems for applications in laser technology, sensors, and scientific research. This individual assists in laboratory, research, or analytical work under direction or supervision of scientific personnel. Operates highly technical experimental apparatus. Has demonstrated considerable skill and good performance in the particular field of activity. The candidate will be responsible for a broad range of tasks in the Optical Fabrication Facility:


  • Dicing of optical components and materials with an ADT 7122 dicing saw.
  • Perform lapping, polishing and grinding of optical materials and components to meet customer specifications using conventional polishing machines (Lapmaster and Strasbaugh).
  • Ensure accuracy of work with optical metrology test equipment (Interferometers, micrometers, comparators, calipers, autocollimators and sag gauges)
  • Solving problems relative to materials, tooling and work-holding arrangements.


Qualifications:  Graduation from a two year day technical school or its equivalent and a minimum of two years of applicable experience are required.


  • 2 years of industry experience in optical fabrication and 2 years of operating high-speed dicing saws (ADT, DISCO, Thermocarbon).
  • Reading and understanding engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience using optical test equipment.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborates well, in a team environment.
  • Understanding of basic shop math such as ratios, graphs, algebra, and basic geometry.


Desired Experience:

  • Experience processing of a range of materials, including glass, crystals, ceramic, composites and metals.
  • Experience with multiple techniques of polishing, such as pitch and pad polishing plus experiences with different types of slurries and polishing compounds.
  • Experience performing critical cleaning of optical surfaces.
  • Basic machining knowledge.
  • Good “hands-on” skills and attention to detail.
  • Capable of working with minimal supervision.
