The Advanced Sensor Systems and Test Beds Group performs concept development, prototype design, analysis, and demonstrations of air defense radars, long range ground based radar systems. In addition to testing at many of the ranges in the U.S., the group has a long-term relationship with the Reagan Test Site (RTS) on the Kwajalein Atoll.  Major activities within the group include the development and testing of RF and optical systems, communication systems, and wideband, airborne, over-the-horizon, and bistatic radar systems with technology development in the areas of phased arrays, advanced waveforms, adaptive signal processing, and unique detection and tracking algorithms.  The work in the group often requires the fabrication of one-of-a-kind operational and experimental test assets in support of a significant amount of field testing and data collection to prove new concepts.  Activities in the group cover a broad and changing spectrum of technical areas and often involve collaboration with other groups in the Laboratory and industry partners.  Principal staff expertise in the group includes system analysis, RF engineering, software architecture, digital signal processing, radar detection and tracking, guidance and control, experimental physics, and hardware development and integration.

The group needs software engineers for rapid prototyping of advanced sensor control and signal processing systems. The focus will be primarily on software for controlling radars, but could also extend to telemetry and optical systems. The successful candidate will follow the full software lifecycle of design, development, testing, timing, debugging, and deployment. Ability to work both individually and as part of a larger team is required.

 Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Math, or a related field
  • Knowledge of C++ object-oriented programming with experience applying this knowledge to complex software architectures
  • Experience with modern software development practices, version control systems, debugging tools, and collaboration tools
  • Experience with software development in a Linux/Unix environment

Desired Skills:

  • Digital signal processing techniques
  • Experience with Python development
  • Experience with other programming/scripting languages such as Java, C, or MATLAB
  • Experience with designing and developing user interfaces, in particular Qt
  • Experience with publish-subscribe middleware, parallel programming, distributed systems, network and real-time programing, and UNIX-like operating system architectures
  • Familiarity with, or a strong desire, to learn about processing and control of sensors (radars)
  • Desire and ability to participate in field testing, which may involve travel
