The Embedded and Open Systems Group researches, develops, and integrates software and processing architectures for sensors, aircraft, ground, and cloud-based systems, to meet challenging national security needs.  To accomplish this, we use our expertise in system architectures, data architectures, cloud computing, software engineering, embedded processing, and prototype development. We apply modern software engineering principles and commercial best practices to ensure that effectiveness, reliability, efficiency, and security are always a priority in all our solutions.  We work in interdisciplinary teams by partnering with fellow Laboratory groups, academia, and industry partners. We succeed by participating in all program phases of system analysis, architecture definition, design, prototyping, field testing, and ultimately the transfer of our technology. 

Position Description


Do you want to help design and build the next generation of Cloud-based architectures for the DoD?  We are looking for people who are proactive, inquisitive, and keep their eye on emerging software and processing trends to round out our team. We need talented, experienced engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including large-scale system design, distributed computing, data storage and data mining, analytical methods, security, and dynamic simulation across a range of information system architectures. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities, and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward

To be successful candidate for this role you will need:


  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field required or in lieu of a Master’s degree, a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of directly related experience will be considered.
  • Experience working with databases, data warehouses, data lakes including technical architectures, information retrieval, data mining
  • Demonstrated experience with cloud service models: Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies
  • Experience with DevSecOps pipeline processes and technologies
  • Deep knowledge of software engineering and programming (Java / C++/Python)
  • Experience participating in multi-disciplinary technical project teams.
  • Experience utilizing industry-standard processes and tools for software development and collaboration such as version control, issue management, and code reviews.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a secret level (DoD) security clearance
  • U.S. Citizenship is required

You will stand out if you also have:


  • Experience working in a team building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
  • Understanding of DoD architectures and services is desirable
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience with collaboration (Confluence, etc.) and issue tracking (JIRA, etc.) tools
  • Experience developing distributed and cloud-based systems and services
  • Experience with data warehousing and data lakes
  • Familiarity with the concept of Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Current in scope Secret or Top Secret level DoD security clearance.
