Technical Staff - Machine Learning Algorithm Developer

Date: Apr 15, 2024

Location: Lexington, MA, US

Company: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

The Homeland Sensors and Analytics Group builds technology to counter threats to our critical infrastructure, land and maritime borders, transportation systems, and public places.  We focus on the development and fielding of advanced sensors, AI and data analytics, and integrated human-machine decision making to help recognize and disrupt these threats.  We specialize in collecting and processing a wide range of data types — including radar, video, imagery, text, point cloud, transactional, and body-worn sensor data — from both commercial and Laboratory-developed sensors. We often apply advanced machine learning methods to convert raw data into actionable insights about the activities of threat actors, networks, or organizations.  Our ultimate goal is to field solutions that significantly enhance the decision-making process of analysts and operators who secure the homeland.  Learn more at https://www.ll.mit.edu/r-d/homeland-protection/homeland-sensors-and-analytics.

Position Description

Our group is looking for motivated researchers and engineers who would like to address critical problems requiring machine learning as part of collaborative, interdisciplinary teams.  Specifically, the candidate will direct the design, implementation, and testing of machine learning algorithms relevant to Homeland Security and Defense applications, sometimes serving as a team lead.  Knowledge of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques is considered important, as well as experience with the design and implementation of such methods on image, video, text, or other sensor data processing tasks.  This position will provide the opportunity to learn about mission-relevant applications of AI and machine learning, conduct independent research (including model design decisions and performance assessments), and discuss the results of that research within collaborative team settings.  The position will also enable the researcher to interface with different agencies and user bases within the US Government, in order to discuss technical concepts and present results.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, statistics, electrical engineering, information science, data science, or an equivalent field.  In lieu of a Ph.D., a Master’s degree with at least four years of related research experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least seven years of related research experience, will be considered.
  • Prior exposure to machine learning algorithms, through coursework and research.
  • Proficiency with Python.
  • Experience with one or several common machine learning, computer vision, or natural language processing toolboxes (PyTorch, Pandas, OpenCV, TensorRT, LibTorch, etc).

Desired Skills

  • Experience with research experimental design methods.
  • Familiarity with additional algorithm development environments/languages like C++, Java, or Matlab.
  • Experience with some software development best practices and collaboration tools (e.g., github) is a plus.
