The Laser Technology and Applications Group develops application-specific solid-state lasers, semiconductor lasers, and beam control and diagnostics for high-energy laser systems. Examples of research activities include creating cryogenic-laser-based illuminators for sensor applications, demonstrating wavelength and coherent laser-beam-combining techniques for scaling fiber amplifier and semiconductor laser arrays to higher brightness, and developing a ground terminal for an advanced NASA laser experiment to a moon-orbiting satellite. These activities span the range from epitaxial growth of semiconductor laser materials and demonstrating innovative laser devices in the laboratory to designing and field-testing complete optical systems.

Job Description

The Systems Administrator (Level IV) will support a wide variety of information technology (IT) tasks across a diverse set of network and computer resources. The Systems Administrator will contribute to the IT team’s efforts to maintain and improve the research group’s computing resources and meet government IT security requirements.  The Systems Administrator will need to develop creative technical solutions to complex IT problems with minimal instruction, and must be comfortable working independently.  Qualified candidates must be able to expand and maintain computer hardware, software, and networks for a variety of operating systems and provide direct desktop support to ~80 users as part of a larger IT team.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide general user support
  • Procure needed computer systems, network hardware, software, etc.
  • Install, configure, and manage Windows, Linux, and Mac desktops and servers, as well as network infrastructure Install and maintain all commercial software
  • Patch and perform backups for group computer systems
  • Manage networks, file shares, virtual infrastructures and SAN/NAS environments Remediate vulnerabilities and maintain compliance with policies and procedures
  • Coordinate with Information System Security Officer (ISSO) for all group Systems Security Plans Document IT procedures
  • Represent the group as a team member for inter-organizational interactions such as infrastructure and security working groups

 

Desired technical skills:

  • Experience with research high performance and real-time computing environments
  • Experience with DoD IT security requirements and procedures, RMF & STIG
  • Highly effective knowledge of one or more of the following:
    • Microsoft Windows 7/10, Windows Server 2008/2012/2016, Office Suites, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, MDT, DOS/PowerShell scripting
    • Linux RHEL/CentOS 6/7
    • ESXi, VMware, VSPhere, NetApp and NAS/SAN’s is desired Splunk, ACAS, Spacewalk, Kickstart, Puppet and shell scripting
  • Certification in one or more of the following: Security+, Comp TIA, Network+

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer and Information Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience or a Master’s degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent will be considered.
  • Ability to achieve or maintain Comp TIA Security+. Higher certifications like CISSP, or equivalent, are highly desirable.
  • ****Position requires a Top Secret security clearance and compartmented access in order to fulfill job duties****
