Job Description

The Assistant Manager for Operations and Maintenance supports the leadership, supervision, and daily operational oversight of the Facilities Services Operations and Maintenance (O&M) organization. The position assists in managing maintenance and operational activities supporting Laboratory facilities, infrastructure reliability, and operational readiness.

Responsibilities include supporting oversight of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, custodial, grounds, and construction services to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective stewardship of Laboratory physical assets. The Assistant Manager collaborates with internal departments, government stakeholders, and contracted service providers to maintain facility performance while minimizing impacts to research operations.

The role provides operational leadership to first-line supervisors and union trades personnel supporting 24-hour, year-round facility operations.

Key Responsabilities

  • Support the O&M Manager in directing daily operations of Facilities Services maintenance and infrastructure activities.
  • Assist in supervising first-line supervisors and union trades personnel supporting continuous operations.
  • Coordinate maintenance, repair, and operational activities across electrical, HVAC, custodial, grounds, and construction services.
  • Oversee contractor performance and service agreements including landscaping, custodial services, waste and recycling removal, snow removal, parking structures, and roadway maintenance.
  • Collaborate with Laboratory departments, Hanscom Air Force Base engineering personnel, and external contractors to coordinate facility work activities.
  • Support union labor relations activities including contract administration and negotiations.
  • Provide input on supervisory and union personnel performance evaluations and workforce development initiatives.
  • Assist in planning work priorities, scheduling, and operational resource allocation.
  • Support budget awareness through monitoring of labor utilization, contractor services, and operational expenditures.
  • Promote compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and Laboratory policies.
  • Maintain effective communication and coordination across Facilities Services and Laboratory departments to support operational continuity.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field with five (5) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience supporting facilities operations within research, university, government, or complex institutional environments preferred.
  • Working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements including ADA compliance and federal, state, and commercial building codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and coordinate complex facilities operations.
  • Experience with facilities management and building automation systems including SAP CMMS, Continuum, Structureware, Automated Logic, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supervising union personnel preferred.
  • Strong planning, financial awareness, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to lead diverse teams and resolve operational challenges effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across organizational levels.

Hiring Range: $112,400 - $148,900
